Lauren Bacall Estate Sale

lauren bacall estate sale

The Lauren Bacall estate sale has been announced by Bonhams Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers. The sale is slated to Include more than 30 jewelry items... most of these pieces are by distinguished designers such as Schlumberger, Elizabeth Gage, Tiffany, Chanel, and Cartier.

“Her jewelry was unique in that it reflected her personal taste and the fact she was very sentimental,” Susan Abeles, Bonhams’ head of Jewelry in the United States, said in a recent interview. “The pieces offered are timeless, understated and classic in design and represent the sophistication and glamour of a true Hollywood legend.”

The Lauren Bacall estate sale will also include approximately seven hundred highly collectible furnishings, paintings, objets d' art, and sculptures, in addition to the jewelry.

With seven hundred art and collectible pieces in the auction, it is understandable that Bonhams publicity focuses primarily on the artworks. Bonhams press release reads in part...

Lauren Bacall, the acclaimed actress of stage and screen who passed away in August 2014, assembled an astonishing collection of art, including works by some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. The Bacall Collection, estimated at $3 million, will be auctioned at Bonhams New York in March 2015.

The highlights of the Bacall collection are eight sculptures by Henry Moore, Britain's greatest 20th century sculptor, two of which were sold in November's Impressionist and Modern sale at Bonhams, New York.

The sculptures by Henry Moore are among approximately 700 lots, including works by Picasso, Hockney and Miro, to be offered by Bonhams. Bacall acquired pieces at galleries and auctions in California, New York, London, Paris and Rome, while her interest in African art developed while on location with her husband, Humphrey Bogart, for the film The African Queen (1951).

Included in the auction are contemporary prints, modern and contemporary art, English and French 18th and 19th century furniture, English Majolica, tribal works or art, jewelry, couture, and luggage by Louis Vuitton and Goyard.

Speaking on behalf of her family, Leslie Bogart said: "We felt and continue to feel that Bonhams is professional and inviting, yet not intimidating. Perfect for us.'

Jon King, Bonhams' Vice President and Director of Business Development, captured the excitement at the company: 'Bonhams is extremely honored to represent the estate of Lauren Bacall at auction. Ms. Bacall has been not only an international treasure to the public at large, but also a long-time friend to Bonhams over the years. We are looking forward to providing the public with a rare glimpse into Ms. Bacall's formidable collecting sense and intuitive style.'

Lauren Bacall was born September 16, 1924, in The Bronx, New York City. She was educated at elementary and high schools in New York state. She then studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan, New York City.

As a teenage fashion model she appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. She was noted for her "cat-like grace, tawny blonde hair and blue-green eyes".

In 1942 she made her acting debut - on Broadway, at age 17. She was a walk-on in Johnny 2 X 4. At age 18, her modeling appearance on the cover of Harper's Bazaar led to her Hollywood film career. The 1944 release of To Have and Have Not, starring Humphrey Bogart launched her career as a leading lady.

Ms. Bacall went on to star in many films, television shows, and Broadway plays. Her film appearances spanned portions of eight decades (1944 - 2012).

The unique actress has many, many admirers. Some know her from her starring roles in Broadway plays, but most have enjoyed her old movies that appear on cable television.

One such admirer began their blog post relating her death this way.,..

"Lauren Bacall is known for her beauty, her distinctive voice, her high-profile marriage to actor Humphrey Bogart and her impeccable taste. She was less known for her jewelry collection."

The jewelry to be sold in her estate auction numbers thirty or so pieces created by premier designers, including Cartier, Tiffany, Chanel, and Schlumberger.

Jean Schlumberger was a Paris jewelry designer, who moved to New York following World War Two. He joined Tiffany & Co. as a featured designer in 1956.

Perhaps the most whimsical piece in her collection is the camel brooch by Elizabeth Gage. The brooch is made in 18k yellow gold, with enamel, cultured pearl, and rose diamond. Bonhams sale literature states that the brooch is accompanied by the original drawing and correspondence from the jeweler, which reveals collaboration and friendship between the two.

Elizabeth Gage is a renowned jewelry designer and master goldsmith based in London. Her website states "Collected and worn by women and men throughout the world, her jewellery is admired for its imaginative use of colour and gemstones. Her close attention to detail together with her highly skilled goldsmiths, bring to life Elizabeth’s extraordinary designs. Elizabeth Gage is not governed by tradition, her jewels are an unorthodox expression of her unique creativity."

The late actress must have agreed with this statement. She included Gage pieces in her personal collection.

Schlumberger, who has been called Ms. Bacall's "favorite designer", produced several magnificent pieces of jewelry for her. The 18k yellow gold and blue enamel bangle bracelet shown here is one of those pieces.

Schlumberger-designed gold and enamel bangle bracelets continue as popular items at Tiffany & Co

And here is another piece by Schlumberger. This 18k yellow gold, amethyst, diamond, and turquoise ring was also designed by Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co.

(In 1956, Jean Schlumberger joined Tiffany & Co. Immediately, his designs were coveted and collected by the world’s most fashionable women. Today, they continue to be worn by +women of unimpeachable taste.)

lauren bacall wearing ropework bracelets

The Hollywood actress was often photographed wearing two 18k yellow gold ropework bracelets. Both bracelets were from designer Jean Schlumberger. Because she wore these two pieces often, and usually together on her right wrist.

The two bracelets were different widths, and one featured diamond accents, but the two pieces worked well together as a part of her unique style .

(Schlumberger's clients, in addition to Lauren Bacall, included Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.)

lauren bacall heart necklace

In a recent interview, Abeles showed the writer a gold necklace with dangling gold hearts by Tiffany & Co. Each heart has a letter that spells out the phrase, “To my own beautiful star from my proud director Ron.” Abeles believes the necklace was a gift from Ron Field, who directed Bacall in the Broadway play, Applause.

“Bacall’s style was unmistakably her own,” Abeles said. “Her jewelry collection represents a woman who knew her own style - one who wore the jewelry rather than the jewelry wearing her. Pieces that might have overshadowed another woman perfectly complemented her beauty.”

The Lauren Bacall estate sale will be held at Bonhams in New York City on March 31, and April 1, 2015.

Cupid to Shower Americans with Jewelry, Candy this Valentine’s Day

Vintage Art Deco Heart and Arrow Brooch

Cupid has some tricks up his (non-existent) sleeve this year with plans to shower Americans with jewelry, candy and a special night out. According to the National Retail Federation’s Valentine’s Day Consumer Spending Survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics, the average person celebrating Valentine’s Day will spend $142.31 on candy, flowers, apparel and more, up from $133.91 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $18.9 billion, a survey high.*

“It’s encouraging to see consumers show interest in spending on gifts and Valentine’s Day-related merchandise - a good sign for consumer sentiment as we head into 2015,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “Hoping to draw in eager shoppers, retailers will offer unique promotions on gifts, meal options at restaurants and even experiences.”

The survey found nine in 10 (91%) plan to treat their significant others/spouses to something special for the consumer holiday, with plans to spend an average of $87.94 on them, up from $78.09 last year. Additionally, 58.7 percent will spend an average of $26.26 on other family members and $6.30 on children’s classmates/teachers.

A record one in five (21.2%) say they will include Fluffy and Fido in their Valentine’s Day plans, looking to spend a mere $5.28 on average – which equates to a whopping $703 million on pint-sized gifts of all varieties.

While most (53.2%) plan to buy candy for the sweet holiday, spending a total of $1.7 billion, one in five (21.1%) plans to buy jewelry for a total of $4.8 billion, the highest amount seen since NRF began tracking spending on Valentine’s gifts in 2010.
